PUBLIC SAFETY: REGIONAL EDITION
Convicted felon, 17, arrested in sex assault

UNION-TRIBUNE

August 20, 2008

SAN DIEGO: Authorities arrested a 17-year-old convicted felon whose DNA was found at a woman's College Area home where she was raped last week, police said yesterday.

The teenager, who lives in Rolando, was arrested during a traffic stop Monday evening on suspicion of sexual assault, San Diego police said. His name was withheld because he is a minor.

The teen, who had been released days earlier from a juvenile detention center, is accused of raping a 47-year-old woman at knifepoint Aug. 13 in her home on 67th Street.

The attacker entered through an unlocked kitchen window about 4 a.m. and demanded money from the woman in her bedroom. When she said she did not have any, he pulled out a knife and raped her, said sex crimes Lt. Carolyn Kendrick.

The woman fought back at one point by hitting the suspect on the head with a glass cup, and he responded by cutting her on a forearm and thigh, Kendrick said.

On Monday, investigators processing evidence from the scene got a match on the attacker's DNA, which was already in a local database.

The teenager has previous convictions for burglary and robbery in 2007 and was also investigated that year in connection with a sexual assault, but the charges were apparently dropped or never filed, Kendrick said. –A.M. & K.D.

Witnesses said the four men had been arguing moments before the shooting and may have come from a local sports lounge shortly before the argument. After the shooting, the assailants left in a red Ford Mustang. –M.A.
