Percival decides against surgery

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Tampa Bay Rays closer Troy Percival decided Monday not to have surgery on his injured right knee and hopes to resume throwing off a mound in four or five days.

Percival damaged cartilage in the knee while fielding a bunt in Thursday's game against Oakland. He might have surgery after the season ends.

If he had surgery Monday, Percival was told he would have been out until October.

“Without it, it's very feasible it's two weeks,” Percival said. “When I'm good to go, I'll be out there. I don't think it's going to get any worst, any better.”

Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon didn't rule out Percival, who is 2-0 with 27 saves, returning by early September.

Rays rookie All-Star third baseman Evan Longoria, on the disabled list with a broken bone in his right wrist, will undergo additional X-rays on Friday. He has been out since Aug. 8.

“It's definitely getting better,” Longoria said. “I could probably play with it, but the risk was that the tip of bone that's fractured could break off. If does break off, then that's a lot more serious and I'd have to have surgery and miss the rest of the year. I'll be pretty cautious about when I come back and then make sure it's almost back to full health.”

Longoria is hitting .278 with 22 homers and 71 RBIs in 104 games.

Also, the Rays released reliever Al Reyes, who rejected a minor league assignment. He had been designated for assignment on Aug. 9
