Spotlight On Del Mar: Looking back on Week 3

UNION-TRIBUNE

August 6, 2008

Highlights: Zenyatta's smashing performance in winning the Clement L. Hirsch Handicap on Saturday to stay undefeated ... Black Mamba's late escape from traffic and victory in Sunday's Grade I John Mabee Handicap ... Soupy winning Sunday's third race. The 7-year-old gelding was claimed by trainer John Sadler to provide Fae Sanger, 88, of Del Mar, with a horse to continue a multidecade string of having at least one starter per Del Mar meeting.

Lowlights: The expected, but nevertheless melancholy, announcement of the retirement of Lava Man ... The announcement of a 3.5 percent reduction in purses for the last three weeks of the meeting, starting Aug. 13 ... The first fatality from afternoon racing, Crazy Cash, in Saturday's seventh race, 16 days into the meeting.

Looking ahead to Week 4

Highlights: Today's Sorrento Stakes includes the first three finishers from the Landaluce Stakes at Hollywood Park – Emmy Darling, Glitter City and Cosmic Queen – and figures to produce a top candidate for the Del Mar Debutante ... Saturday's La Jolla Handicap will advance some 3-year-olds to the Del Mar Derby ... Undefeated Hollywood Juvenile champion Azul Leon will be going for his third straight victory in Sunday's Best Pal. A win would make him the early favorite for the Futurity.

Notable: Rafael Bejarano had seven winners on the week and increased his lead to six (22-16) over Tyler Baze from the four to start the week. Joel Rosario's eight wins on the week moved him into a tie with Baze ... In the trainer race, John Sadler had nine wins for the week for 14 on the season and a six-win lead over Doug O'Neill, Mike Mitchell and Jerry Hollendorfer ... The Bravery is in concert Friday night ... Saturday is cap giveaway day.
