Jeff Siegel's analysis

UNION-TRIBUNE

August 15, 2008

FIRST RACE – RUSSIAN LIQUOR looked sharp beating maidens last month and a similar effort should be good enough for a repeat score. He stretches out for the first time but is bred to enjoy the added ground. BENCHMARK KID is another sprint-to-route play and has enough early speed to be on or near the lead throughout for a trainer that does well with this angle. ROMANCE IS ZENON figures to be within range throughout with a good ground-saving trip from his rail post and won't have to improve much to take it all. Long shot: Byjohn.
SECOND RACE – KILMARTIN HALL beat a slightly softer field in game style under this bug boy last month and if she can turn in two alike she can score right back. GOLD DATNOID fits on numbers and is very dangerous as a route to sprint play for Monteleone. HARD WOMAN drops to her lowest level ever and could be a late threat in a soft field. Long shot: Tricky Viviana.
THIRD RACE – PARADISE POINT is a first timer with a solid series of works in a race begging to be one by a fresh face. The daughter of Skimming seems as good as any. MY SISTER LAUREEN, second in her last pair, has improving numbers and is the one to fear most. GOOD SHOT MALLY chased much tougher in her debut last winter and seems sure to improve dropping into a bottom rung maiden claimer for her comeback. Long shot: Victorios Princess.
FOURTH RACE – DONAS MIRACLE LANE ran well over this course last month when a close up third in a similar spot and gets Gomez today. She's lightly raced and likely to continue her improvement for Hollendorfer. HAVENS LAKE, first off the claim for Spawr, fits on speed figures and should be prominent throughout. BEAU CHANT may be coming around a bit and didn't run badly in her only prior turf attempt. Long shot: Canonita.
FIFTH RACE – TACTFUL flashed ability in his debut when a decent third after pressing the pace and if he moves forward as expected the son of Bertrando should be set to graduate. SIDANDFRANK, a first timer with a series of fast works, has a big look in an open fray. TIZ AGAIN ROUSED had early speed before weakening in his debut in June and seems sure to improve with experience for Mullins. Long shot: Best of Intentions.
SIXTH RACE – NORTH FORK looked good beating a softer field in convincing fashion with a strong figure and seems capable of repeating on the raise despite being wheeled back in only nine days. Bejarano rides him back for Mitchell. SOUTH COAST, freshened since May, should be on or near the lead throughout while returning to the main track after several races on turf. NINA'S PAD, now in the Sadler barn and landing Gomez, is likely to improve and is worth using in the exotics. Long shot: Storm Dragon.
SEVENTH RACE – SWEETER STILL gets a much better draw today for her first start since early July and the Mullins trained filly can beat this field with a repeat of her best races during her sharp spring campaign. MISSIT, a beaten choice in the San Clemente Handicap, tries a slightly easier gang today and should be right there. DUBAI MAJESTY is a sharp Florida invader and her best effort should be good enough for a piece of it. Long shot: Gorgeous Goose.
EIGHTH RACE – PICK TO CLICK chased tough straight maidens in his debut and today drops into a high priced claimer while switching to Gomez. He should improve considerably for Baffert with a race under his belt. MR. ROD is improving with racing and should display good zip from the rail. Solis stays aboard for Hendricks. BRUSHBURN is a first timer with a solid series of workouts for Abrams and should be fit to fire a big shot in an open affair. Long shot: El Tajin.
Best bet: North Fork (6th).
