UNION-TRIBUNE

August 20, 2008

Highlights: Jockey Alex Solis sweeping the weekend stakes, scoring with Magical Fantasy in the Del Mar Oaks on Saturday and America's Friend in the Solana Beach on Sunday Trainer Barry Abrams scoring a 2-3 finish in the Oaks and 1-2 in the Solana Beach California-based sire Unusual Heat continuing to build his reputation with efforts by progeny such as America's Friend and Lethal Heat.

Lowlights: The passing of Bob Benoit, former Hollywood Park general manager, founder of Benoit and Associates track photography, a friend to all and fixture in Southern California racing for decades The first week under the reduced purse structure, which, among other things, meant the Oaks was worth $350,000 rather than the originally intended $400,000.

LOOKING AHEAD TO WEEK 6

Highlights: The biggest week of the year, capped by Sunday's Pacific Classic Day stakes extravaganza featuring the $1 million Pacific Classic, the Pat O'Brien Handicap, Rancho Bernardo Handicap and Del Mar Mile plus a shirt giveaway Saturday's Del Mar Handicap, which kicks off a weekend full of Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” qualifiers.

Notable: Joel Rosario had five wins on the week to trim Rafael Bejarano's lead in the jockeys' race to three (31-28). Tyler Baze (26) and Garrett Gomez (24) remain in striking distance if able to get on a roll In the trainers' race, John Sadler's seven wins put further distance between him (24) and Mike Mitchell (14), Doug O'Neill (13) and Jeff Mullins (13).
