Jeff Siegel's analysis

UNION-TRIBUNE

August 17, 2008

FIRST RACE SEARCHFORTHETRUTH looked good winning at Solano recently while earning a career top speed figure and if he can duplicate that effort today he can win right back. PROFESSNL COURTESY, third in his last three, has the style that should be effective at this seven furlong distance and should be running on strongly late. SAVVY AND SMOOTH, a route to sprint play, lands the comfortable outside post and has a look off his clever maiden score two runs back. Long shot: Lucky Honey.

SECOND RACE STEPPIN OUT ROSE moves up a notch following a game score here last month and this genuine and consistent mare should be set for another winning effort. Espinoza rides her back. LA MANDONNA, first off the claim for Mullins, is racing in sharp form and looms the one to fear most. TOO PHAR, freshened and dropping in class, fits on numbers and is a “must use” in the exotics. Long shot: Startin Fresh.

THIRD RACE SENSATIONAL SCORE was a tad disappointing when fourth in the Claiming Crown Jewel but returns to Del Mar where he was a convincing winner two races back. Rosario should have him along in time. SECRET SHUTTLE stretches out for the first time and if he can duplicate his sprint form around two turns, he'll be right there. TIMIAS, first off the claim for Sadler, seems sure to improve and is worth using in the exotics. Long shot: Mr. Katz.

FOURTH RACE LINDA LOU, second in both of her starts to date, looks too quick for these and should dominate from gate to wire. STUNNINGLY, beaten a neck in promising debut, looms the one to fear most. PARADISE ISLE has worked like she's got some talent for Warren and is bred to win early (In Excess). Long shot: Sekmet.

FIFTH RACE EARTH PLANET is a useful invader from France in Frankel's barn and his European form would appear to make him a major contender in this conditioned allowance affair. He gets the rail and Gomez and is the barn is overdue to get hot. KRIS SILVER is the likely pacesetter and could be dangerous if she can shake loose early without pressure. TYCOON DOBY seems to be rounding into his best form and won't have to improve much more to take it all. Long shot: By Spot.

SIXTH RACE STREET HERO, in the money in both of his starts and nosed out in his most recent start, figures to be a short price to earn his diploma today. The major concern is the rail and the shortening in trip. OYSTER CAT has trained like a good thing for Harty, gets Bejarano, and may be the best of the newcomers. NOCHANGENWEATHER has shown he can run some and should at least get a piece of it. Long shot: Launch the Bull.
SEVENTH RACE AMERICA'S FRIEND keeps firing bullets and earned a career top speed figure when beating a good allowance field over this course last month. She can come right back and do it again. SILVER Z exits the best races and is strictly the one to catch. She won her only start on turf in gate to wire fashion. TUTTA BELLA should be prominent throughout and figures for a share. Long shot: Lightmyfirebaby.

EIGHTH RACE BILO, a former Grade 1 stakes winning sprinter, surfaces for a tag today and if he's got one more good one left in him, the veteran gelding will outclass this field. SWISS SKI, in the money in his last pair, should be rolling from off the pace and will be tough if our top pick fails to fire. CRIMSON COWBOY has a look off his sharp score up north two runs back. Long shot: Swift Demand.

NINTH RACE COOLERATOR drops to the bottom rung maiden claiming level and has little to beat. At this extended sprint distance he should be able to produce the last run. IT'S TIME TO SHINE has good recent form at the level and figures in the exotics once again. ROCKET WRANGLER seems to be coming around a bit and may out finish the others. Long shot: Thunder Alliance.
Best bet: America's Friend (7th)
