Jeff Siegel's analysis

UNION-TRIBUNE

August 18, 2008

FIRST RACE QUEEN OF VICTORY didn't get the best of runs when third in her debut and with that race under her belt and clear sailing the O'Neill-trained juvenile should handle this field. Bejarano stays aboard. TRASH MASTER, fist off the claim for Sadler, likely will improve for her new connections following a bullet recent work. Look for her to do her best running from off the pace. SWEETWATERWIND, fourth in her debut despite a slow start and a wide trip vs. softer, has a good look despite tackling considerably tougher foes today. Long shot: Tricky Deeds.

SECOND RACE SIDEPOCKET CAT comes here from the Bay Area razor sharp and looks well placed for another big effort. Baze should have him on or near the lead throughout. SMOOCHER seems like the best of the closers and this class dropper in the Mitchell barn retains Gomez. With a fast pace, he could get up in time. DRIVEN BY EXCESS, very popular at the claim box of late, adds speed to the field and rates a big look off his clever recent score vs. softer. Long shot: Sorta Gold.

THIRD RACE EVALUATE is a 10-race maiden and may be a hard one to trust, but the Baffert-trained horse dominates on speed figures and may have finally found a field he can beat. HIDDEN TRAIL adds blinkers for his second lifetime outing and seems sure to improve for Frankel. In a soft field, he looks very dangerous with the switch to Bejarano. PEARL FISHER removes blinkers for his comeback and his form earlier this year makes him a fit with these. Long shot: Magna Cum Laude.

FOURTH RACE TAP IT LIGHT, claimed in his last pair, makes his first start for Hollendorfer and gets the rail and Bejarano. From the rail, he figures to enjoy a perfect trip. WILD BUDDY does his best running on the front end and if he can clear this field without undue pressure, the Sadler-trained old-timer could be hard to catch. GOLD TRIM, claimed in his last pair and now in the Becerra barn, fits on numbers and should be a strong late threat. Long shot: Our Dancer.

FIFTH RACE VULCAN is improving with racing and with another forward move today should earn his diploma for the powerful Sadler-Gomez team. DREAMED DAY adds blinkers and rates a look in a soft field with his best effort. HOLY HUMOR adds speed to the field and may stick around for a share. Long shot: Must Be Joking.

SIXTH RACE ATLANTRA'S TANTRUM, fourth in the Graduation Stakes despite lacking room in the drive, figures to be running on strongly late and with clear sailing should get up in time. DASHWOOD won at first asking with a solid figure and was claimed by Knapp. With improvement, he should very nicely with these despite the raise in class. BOOT CUT has a solid race over the track and is worth using in the exotics. Long shot: Branquino.

SEVENTH RACE DELTA STORM is genuine and consistent and should enjoy a good trip from the favorable rail. Bejarano stays aboard for Mitchell. MY CITY BY THE BAY, third in a similar race over this course last month, won't have to improve much to take it all. EASY ON THE EYE, an even fourth vs. similar in his local debut, has a look if he can move forward for Knapp. Long shot: Summer Haze.

EIGHTH RACE IF NOT FOR YOU tipped her hand with finishing third in a similar spot at Hollywood Park and vastly improved number. A repeat of that effort today should be more than good enough to beat this field. FLASHING FORWARD is dropping and dangerous and the one to fear most. She should be running on late. SUMMERSGOLDENGIRL may be coming around bit following an okay third vs. softer recently and is worth using in the exotics. Long shot: Turks Heart.

Best bet: Ten Churros (6th)
